Three year-old colt, Take a Chance, took the field wire to wire in the 1-1/16 mile, $102,100, Maiden Allowance, 4th race today at Woodbine.
After a sound second in his first career start at Aqueduct in New York for other interests, Owners Donald Ferguson, William Carr and Anderson Farms Ontario, Inc. took a chance buying the colt for $150,000 in the Keeneland Horses of Racing Age sale in April.
Bred by Rod Ferguson Farms Ltd. in Ontario, the son of Munnings – Gold Medalist, by Medaglia d’Oro moved to the barn of Trainer Catherine Day Phillips at Woodbine and finished a game fifth in a Maiden Special Weight on June 20.
Take a Chance broke sharply to take the lead out the gate and held a 1 to 1/2 length lead throughout under the guidance of jockey Rafael Hernandez. Under pressure in the stretch Take a Chance held off his rivals to win by 1-3/4 lengths at the wire on the Tapeta.
