Encierro did not give up the lead from gate to wire to win the $101,200 ninth race Allowance for three-year olds and up today at Woodbine for trainer Catherine Day Phillips.
Encierro broke sharply to nab the lead in the first sixteenth mile and was hustled by Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson to maintain his front running position and hold off a couple of late chargers to win by 1/2 a length at the wire.
The 1-1/16 mile race was moved from the turf to the Tapeta after storms rolled through earlier in the card.
This was the second lifetime win for the 4 year-old gelding by Pioneer of the Nile – Holy Eclair, by Holy Bull bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Ontario Inc. and Marette Farrell, and is owned by George P. Ledson, Willow Pond Stable and Anderson Farms Ontario Inc.
